I designed and made these cups, which embody the celebration of ancient techniques and craftsmanship. The cup design synthesizes simplicity and tradition of the Japanese technique that dates back to seven thousand years ago. The signature design of Urushi Cups is defined with a single uninterrupted contour that brings together the hard with soft, simplicity with precision, and antiquity with modern. The result is a form that emphasizes a modern style shaped to its purest form.
With this in mind, I developed a new way to arrange the fiber allowing me to create a single piece of a more dynamic form yet structurally sound. The three sap or "lacquer" is integrated into the process, sealing the fiber and giving the piece the silky warm finish of this beloved natural material. Appreciation of complexity and craftsmanship makes it possible to combine a contemporary production system with the use of organic materials.
I got to immerse myself in the use of the traditional technique of Urushi lacquer. This began six years ago while I was on a trip to Japan.
